00:00:00: Welcome back to the Lucarno Film Festival.
00:00:02: We bring you here our next interview for the film You Don't Be Long Here by Florin Serban.
00:00:07: Hello, Florin!
00:00:09: Your film is running in the main competition... ...you're tackling a very contemporary topic Inspired by an actual movement or phenomenon In Russia.
00:00:19: Is that true?
00:00:20: Would like talk about it A little
00:00:22: bit.
00:00:22: This isn´t my inspiration.
00:00:23: The whole idea of this movie started with an exercise I did at my film school school and we have an acting department.
00:00:32: And there, we had this acting exercise between two actors one the father when the son...and it was about a father who feels strong these days for his sons.
00:00:41: It wasn't unimprovisation but felt very wrong in many ways because I always think that something deeply natural for parents to be deeply attached with their sons Started series of questions.
00:00:54: This is how it started.
00:00:56: Many other themes came and attached to this field.
00:01:00: And because for me, it's like I start with an idea... This idea is a magnet of other things that are happening around me which interest in my life.
00:01:11: The youth movement you're referring to was something that accidentally met on the internet.
00:01:16: It's an organization right now called DeFonk but doesn't exist anymore apparently related to a youth organisation close to Putin.
00:01:24: They were doing some civil militia.
00:01:27: They were taking care of business that the police wouldn't take care off, cars that are parked illegally on a sidewalk or the cars in Moscow and St.
00:01:35: Petersburg would go to the side wall just past the trash and they're doing something similar.
00:01:42: And then I started looking into it and apparently there was three other movements in Romania That were similar but things didn't really take off.
00:01:51: It stayed like this so i don' t know more about them as well, they were sympathizers for some far right movements.
00:02:01: In the film it becomes very serious when the son is a crime suspect in case of deadly assault or even murder and father has to ask himself where that violence and aggression did come from?
00:02:14: And also faces own responsibility.
00:02:17: in this case.
00:02:18: would you like to talk about these things?
00:02:19: Everything that happened in the film was work of fiction.
00:02:23: This ideas are at core The murder that the son does in the streets.
00:02:29: For me, it's a subplot because she wants a pretext to dive into the relation and broken relations of these two characters.
00:02:38: I tried very much to stay away from who done this genre type American thriller.
00:02:43: so i was focusing more on moral side of story.
00:02:46: So for me its a moral tale.
00:02:48: Its a moral thriller.
00:02:49: Who has the guilt?
00:02:50: This is the kid.
00:02:52: Is society or father?
00:02:53: This one important?
00:02:55: Do
00:02:55: you see that the older, especially the older male generation in Romania or maybe general society is in part responsible for right-wing tendencies and also the violence that erupts into current younger generations?
00:03:10: I think there's a rupture of communication between generations.
00:03:14: As it always was the case... ...I felt disconnected as a teenager from my parents.
00:03:18: Teenager feels disconnected to their parent who thinks they don't understand anything.
00:03:22: When it comes our times think it's much different.
00:03:25: What I think is the context that we are in this communication environment where For these far-right movements, I think it's very different from one society to another.
00:03:45: I think most of them are better than we were, that my generation was when they were their age.
00:04:04: But i think the kids who can go wrong will be much worse.
00:04:08: then.
00:04:11: what could happen to me?
00:04:13: And this is a valid question... If i would have lived in Romania between worlds What happened with me ?
00:04:18: In terms of ideology where do you stand for it?
00:04:22: ?
00:04:22: For Romania its very important thirty-five years of democracy after fifty years of communists.
00:04:31: And our communist was very different from the rest of the Communist bloc because it was a very national communist, so this did not disappear in Romania and I think many kids are better than us at realizing the bullshit.
00:04:44: but there some kids that go wrong for sure.
00:04:48: How does the theme of toxic masculinity and patriarchy play into this story?
00:04:53: It's a very male coded.
00:04:56: their figure appears, but the main conflict is really between
00:05:04: type of male.
00:05:11: The one that dreams to push the boundaries like
00:05:39: path line out for a son.
00:05:42: How do you relate to these things?
00:05:44: For me, the trip of being an artist is not put myself in films.
00:05:49: but ask my self what if I would be at this position and start from there.
00:05:54: And i did it pretty much everything i've done all my movies.
00:05:59: If u saw first film i want to whistle i whistle!
00:06:01: I did, apparently.
00:06:02: now
00:06:02: yes...i'm the inmate..I have never been to prison them and to realize what's going on there.
00:06:11: But myself, in my private life I've never been too prisoned...I come from a family with lots of love & lot of care And i was pretty much away from troubles.
00:06:19: but..i put myself into the shoes that kid could write his story.
00:06:23: Same!
00:06:24: I put myself in the shoes of the ranger who lives in the forest The boxer in box Of one that wants to go to America In Love To America And i put myself inside this character or surgeon What if I would be this guy?
00:06:39: what If i would not love Michael, what if I will expect something from him and he does don't want to go that path.
00:06:45: But if with these days This is the trip that's I willing take in order To get best out of me?
00:06:51: on every movie How
00:06:53: did you shape a specific style Of film?
00:06:55: it very dark also very drab colors.
00:06:58: It seems very cold like reflection of father-son relationship which Is cool and coldish.
00:07:05: Would You Like Tell A Little About Your Style?
00:07:11: I also wanted to work with these long takes because an educated viewer, when he's pushed Many times, as a director you get exactly the reaction that you don't want.
00:07:40: You get some resistance.
00:07:40: If I would shove it to you... ...I think i'd create some sort of resistance.
00:07:45: My bet on this film was.. ..I will try to engage the viewer little by little and let him observe.
00:07:52: Let reality unfold in front of him instead of grabbing him with his neck and showing him Listen!
00:07:57: Look at this now!
00:07:58: For three seconds No?
00:08:00: look at this one Another five seconds.
00:08:01: Now The music is coming And we'll tell you That This is some scary shit going on.
00:08:06: There are scenes that last in one shot for fifteen minutes and if you're engaged, If You're Engaged In Fifteen Minutes ,you almost forget That your watching a movie or listening to this one Or Listening To This One And Your Kind Of Part of That Reality I think we should take as filmmakers.
00:08:22: We Should Be Bolded Encourages And If We Feel That This Is The Right Path i Think We Should Push It Not To Play Against Audience But To Make The Audience Come To You.
00:08:31: Instead Of Me Coming To Them We Are Making Movies For The And for me, it's a gesture of humbleness and respect towards the public to tell them listen I believe you can take it.
00:08:42: I believe You Can Go In Look For Fifteen Minutes One Shot And Listen To These Characters!
00:09:22: I
00:09:25: kept it for the end by making him that way.
00:09:33: The idea came from a reunion that I had when everybody was... We met after, i think thirty years From graduating high school.
00:09:40: Everybody was talking about their achievements And some of my former colleagues were talking About the achievements with a lot of sadness.
00:09:48: and this is where it struck me.
00:09:50: What if somebody stands up and goes through A total lie?
00:09:53: And tells not the life That he has but the Life He would love to have This what's his dream for his son?
00:10:05: What
00:10:08: would you hope for this film to achieve?
00:10:11: if it could be one thing?
00:10:20: I hope it can get as many viewers possible in Europe.
00:10:48: that
00:11:01: you would like to mention?
00:11:02: Yes, actually I'm shooting in one month.
00:11:04: The film is very challenging for me.
00:11:06: it's a film written by student of mine from the film school.
00:11:10: It's called Ella or the Memories Of A Dutiful Daughter Preferring Memoirs Of A Beautiful Daughter From Simone de Beauvoir And its story about abusive parenthood living with alcoholies and family.
00:11:22: Its difficult story.
00:11:23: we just finished casting main character who was girl at seventeen.
00:11:27: We will start shooting on the seventeen of September.
00:11:30: Wonderful, we are excited to see that and thank you so much for this interview!
00:11:34: Thank You.
