00:00:00: Welcome to the Biennale and its side-section, the Cinemane de la Critica.
00:00:04: Thank you!
00:00:05: I'm here with the statistic director Beatrice Fiorentino.
00:00:08: Hi, Beatrice
00:00:09: How
00:00:10: do you feel at start of a new edition?
00:00:12: Very excited very tired actually but i don't feel the tiredness.
00:00:17: there's lot energy that we're expecting to receive from our young filmmakers.
00:00:22: so something is going on.
00:00:24: yeah it super exciting.
00:00:26: There has been lots talk about things are happening.
00:00:30: Just a bearer who said it's the most political edition ever.
00:00:33: The whole Biennale had a lot of backlash for
00:00:36: its own political
00:00:37: decisions, how does the Setimana feel and this climate?
00:00:40: And How do you see the Setimana in this context?
00:00:43: we were pioneers In the sense that our section I feel like is a very political section even if Our priority or course still language to make him discovering talents But there isn't attention through the political aspects was born forty-one years ago.
00:01:01: The starting point, the main goal is to stimulate an internal debate inside Venice.
00:01:07: It started from Viennale.
00:01:08: actually it's a independent section organizing from the syndicate of fin critiques.
00:01:15: so we are independent but feel like part.
00:01:27: Delegate said we have to think about political statement and artistic debate, both our references.
00:01:34: For me it's pretty obvious that inventors use say every film is political.
00:01:40: living in such a crazy world is mandatory.
00:01:43: do take positions not just political.
00:01:45: the way of filmmaking its top priority.
00:01:47: but I feel like contemporary cinema has to be related.
00:01:51: present days It's like a plus.
00:01:53: We had beautiful film But still if this doesn't happen anything to do with what present day is, I feel it's less interesting.
00:02:00: The young filmmakers we are embracing this journey if they want to have this today sister's possibility and they're very proactive.
00:02:08: i think that really wants be part of something.
00:02:11: a change-changing movement.
00:02:12: It not ideological but impress me in these years edition Is the way They want to rethink past story history legacy rethinking giving personal or generational proposal without violence or revolution, they just want to rethink the system.
00:02:30: Our show Sand which is a film from Shalini Adnani.
00:02:34: it's probably more traditional in terms of filmmaking but Trojan impressed me with how she reconsidered the value of man.
00:02:42: all our lives are based on what you can afford.
00:02:45: this is wrong way.
00:02:46: I
00:02:46: totally agree and let me quickly jump into there.
00:02:49: so this cinema was made by the association of Italian Film Critics exactly Association of Film Critics, for example in Germany or many countries.
00:02:58: membership is dependent on a fee.
00:03:01: Would you say that it doesn't impose a classist limit as some people are fed by poverty and who cannot join which is very realistic experience?
00:03:10: That I had for example couldn't join for decades.
00:03:13: Yeah And even now its an extreme financial strain from
00:03:16: Very contradictory field.
00:03:19: It's very interesting.
00:03:20: Many things they want to.
00:03:22: I can relate.
00:03:23: somehow the industry.
00:03:24: This field is very capitalistic.
00:03:26: It has a lot of structures and it's very elitist, And there are many differences between general rules for everybody.
00:03:37: I don't know anybody working in this field that can have just one position or ten jobs to pay the
00:03:46: mortgage.
00:03:48: Absolutely!
00:03:49: And even rents With services and stuff.
00:03:55: Yeah, exactly This is the world we are living in And our generation and yours more open More than ours Is...is living In!
00:04:03: We have of course to discuss it.
00:04:05: Try do our best To change.
00:04:07: So will there be a change?
00:04:08: The fee Will drop?
00:04:09: Yes yes
00:04:09: yeah We feel we discussed A lot about the fee.
00:04:12: Actually were an independent section so we Steep some help from the government but It's not enough to cover all that things.
00:04:20: we need to settle this thing To have an impact, you need to set up a proper thing.
00:04:25: We were discussing about the fee.
00:04:27: actually we feel like we had small amount of money that helps us cover at least some expenses.
00:04:35: people are working here but we really believe doing something important is not don't save lives directly.
00:04:49: you need to speak and raise the voice, maybe they can change something.
00:04:56: So I know that P is something but our fee this year was increased than it was like six... sixty euros?
00:05:03: i
00:05:03: think its a
00:05:03: lot!
00:05:04: i don't think so because we had very small fee comparing with other sections..i
00:05:09: leave it at that ,but thats comparing wrong-to-wronger.
00:05:12: if there's always somebody who does it worse ..at this time as much as makes me sad.
00:05:16: but film festivals are drastically losing their importance.
00:05:19: still using their audience.
00:05:21: I also see like how all the festivals, even big ones How they struggle.
00:05:25: Every edition is a push and in general cinema The only thing that really seems to draw in big audiences Seems to be blossom.
00:05:33: How hard it is for an event focused on artistic quality And as you said political impact To sustain audience and killing?
00:05:44: I'm not convinced that all the festival are pushing on blockbuster.
00:05:48: No i wouldn't say that the only thing that really draws on crowd.
00:06:20: boring to follow the main competition in the big festivals, but still a certain regard, anorama.
00:06:27: The work of the critic and there are many possibilities for the audience to discover, free programmers to discover new talents and new ways of filmmaking.
00:06:37: I don't feel like here.
00:06:38: we're at the underdog section For instance But We have our audience And it's fair enough.
00:06:44: In this space enough or everywhere.
00:06:46: Our section is focused just on first features is like betting on something new.
00:06:52: It's a mangle, we don't have blockbuster thing even if sometimes you had an opening with some kind of star.
00:06:59: but still in the independent environment We all try to find the palace In order to have some coverage and be part of game book living this type of situation.
00:07:10: film festivals are very strong motivation in terms of research.
00:07:14: it changed a lot.
00:07:15: The way we watch films of course had an impact.
00:07:19: But still, I think that festivals still maintain the role or being in a place where community can meet and discuss their films.
00:07:27: you are queuing and you're meeting someone.
00:07:29: have you seen this film?
00:07:31: This is life for festivals!
00:07:32: And there's no platform to replace
00:07:35: them.
00:07:35: There are so many other platforms... ...and why it isn't such effect as I'm aware of at Venice.
00:07:42: but many festivals have larger and bigger screening libraries not only for press public audience.
00:07:48: And there are even things to my horror and disdain like online accreditations at big festivals, Like Locarno has an online accreditation, Sundance as in Online Accreditation...and many mid-sized and smaller festival.
00:08:02: all of them offer more & More online.
00:08:04: Would you say that can never happen at the Setimana?
00:08:07: Is There a push to go more online?
00:08:10: No!
00:08:10: Not for us.
00:08:11: It's The opposite.
00:08:12: We had A lot Of Proposals In These Terms From Flash Portals In Themself.
00:08:15: Okay we Can bio your.
00:08:17: it's a country of what I have been saying.
00:08:19: so as we just had nine titles and nine short films.
00:08:23: So for us is an issue.
00:08:25: but this situation allowed us to be very protective with our films, And assure them these kinds space screening room physical catalogue printed with essays written by Our group of selection committee on part of different generation.
00:08:40: But i still think We Have To Defend This Space As Something We Really Have To Take Care
00:08:45: Of.
00:08:46: Otherwise,
00:08:46: I feel like i will try to send the event until it is inevitable but... ...I think its still far.
00:09:14: a push from the rest of the festival to be more conservative.
00:09:21: what Alberto Barbera says in terms of quality.
00:10:02: a lot of attention on these aspects.
00:10:15: I think it's common sense to be open, and i have to add this thing...I'm easily bored!
00:10:20: I try to avoid being bored and to bore our audience who needs like spontaneous to go towards different kinds of suggestions but as an niche when you just have nine quarters available It is probably easier if we had to proceed in different ways.
00:10:36: Of course during the selection process many things can happen.
00:10:39: Maybe for instance You have an idea During their springtime.
00:10:42: This year it would be amazing to have nine female directors, but this is not a magical catalogue that you can pass through.
00:10:50: You invite the female director just because you love the film and the way... And she already had an invitation from Toronto and shes gone.
00:10:58: so never know!
00:10:59: It's very fast process..you have to be reactive and keep in mind many things.
00:11:05: Try take decisions.
00:11:08: if its right decision.
00:11:09: We are good people and we try do our best.
00:11:12: hopes for the upcoming edition of that festival.
00:11:14: So not
00:11:14: so easy because it's weird to be here in a very privileged situation with the worst burning outside, I don't want to be out-of-the-history.
00:11:23: Be this bubble and smile!
00:11:27: Pretending everything is fine?
00:11:28: Nothing is fine.
00:11:30: but we will have an opportunity share emotions during these ten days we will have here in two weeks.
00:11:43: We'll help us to resonate on them and be back at home with something, new energies and desires that do everything better.
00:11:51: I don't know how?
00:11:52: it's just because for us is easy decisions Just vote, this is our role.
00:11:57: And then if not upto us anymore i would love to spread some seeds.
00:12:02: Then its up to you.
00:12:02: Thankyou
00:12:03: so much for your
00:12:04: time.
